Archaeology, turtles and Santa Claus!
Patara was one of the oldest and most important cities in Lycia.
It is renowned as the birthplace of Apollo and St Nicholas (who later passed into legend as Santa Claus) as well as the home of an important oracle.
As a principle port on the Lycian coast Patara has a long and varied history which has included the empires of the Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans and much evidence can be seen of these civilisations in the ruins surrounding todays village.
Reported to be one of the best in the Mediterranean, the beach at Patara is 50m wide and stretches 20km! This part of the coastline has the added attraction of being the nesting site for caretta caretta, or sea turtles.
